Case Study – Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Surprise Visit
Businesses across Great Britain are subject to surprise inspections by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Site inspections are carried out, checking that employers and workers know the risks, plan their work and are using the right health and safety controls.
A small engineering company (8-10 employees) whose primary activities are the use of lathes, milling machines and cutting and welding equipment was subject to such a visit.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visit subsequently resulted in an improvement notice being issued requiring remedial actions which included the wearing of RPE whilst welding, occupational health screening and a before use check to be carried out on work equipment.
This is where Crownford stepped in.
Crownford worked with the company to implement the following controls:
Welding – Produced a welding procedure, provided information on occupational health screening (contact) and liaised with the RPE supplier
Work equipment – produced a before use checklist (emergency stops etc)
Communicated with the HSE in regard to the added controls
Completed all actions issued by the HSE and the case was subsequently closed
Engaging with a professional Health & Safety advisor is a powerful ally.
